The prospective natural gas would primarily serve the local market through power generation from a relatively cleaner and cheaper indigenous source of energy. The prospective resources are estimated to cover natural gas demand under normal and accelerated growth scenarios for years to come.
One direct benefit stemming from an indigenous source of energy is related to Lebanon becoming an energy self-sufficient country.
In turn, this would lead to the reduction of the financial burden on the budget as Lebanon imports the majority of its energy needs.
As a result, industries in general and energy intensive industries in particular would become more competitive given the access to un-interrupted power generation; and households would benefit from one source of reliable power generation determined by a non-subsidised market price.
